This Pride Month, we celebrate LGBTQIA+ individuals, including those with disabilities. Research shows that LGBTQIA+ people are more likely to have a disability than the general population. The fight for LGBTQ+ rights and disability rights go hand in hand, from workplace protections to healthcare access. Known as intersectionality, studying the complex barriers faced by people with multiple, historically marginalized identities is critical to fully understand and address inequities in health outcomes and access to care. The fight for access to meaningful employment, social acceptance, healthcare, and more are shared by many marginalized identities and must be looked at through an intersectional lens. Disability rights are LGBTQIA+ rights, and Best Buddies promotes the inclusion of all individuals with IDD, including LGBTQIA+ individuals. Happy Pride month from Best Buddies Minnesota!
