Celebrating the Incredible Impact of Jill Ruggiero: An Outstanding Best Buddies Advisor
At Best Buddies in Pennsylvania, we are privileged to have remarkable advisors who dedicate themselves to fostering friendship and inclusion. One such extraordinary advisor is Jill Ruggiero. With a 27-year teaching career, Jill’s role as a Best Buddies advisor has become one of her most rewarding experiences, profoundly impacting both high school students and their buddies.
Jill joined Best Buddies as an advisor last year, bringing her passion and dedication to the program. She has witnessed firsthand the emotional, social, and intellectual growth that Best Buddies fosters. Currently, her chapter boasts 34 members, including 10 buddy pairs, supported by a strong officer core of eight student leaders, two of whom have IDD, and one who happens to be her daughter, Nina.
As a parent, Jill has experienced immense joy watching her daughter positively impact her peers while also being deeply influenced by students with IDD. Attending the Best Buddies Leadership Conference in Indiana was a significant milestone for Nina. Despite initial nerves about being away from home, Nina returned with excitement, ready to share her experiences. From pep rallies to engaging activities, Nina immersed herself in the conference’s electric atmosphere. Witnessing her growth and passion for supporting individuals with IDD was truly touching for Jill. She is grateful for the transformative impact Best Buddies has had on Nina’s personal development.
Throughout the school year, Jill’s busy chapter participates in carefully planned events. As an honors math teacher, Jill cherishes the interaction between all members and the aides working alongside the students. Seeing their joy during after-school or weekend activities is a highlight for her, often providing the motivation she needs to get through the day or week.
One of the most impactful events this year was the chapter’s project of constructing plastic mats for a local homeless organization. Initiated by a student leader, this event saw all members collaborating to bring the project to fruition. The teamwork and dedication displayed were truly inspiring. Other past highlights include character-themed birthday parties, the Buddy Bowling Outing, the Fall Fest at Owen J. Roberts High School, Trick or Treat with Autism Wings, Fans in the Stands for the PWHS Bocce Team, the Polar Pop, and playing hockey with the PWHS Championship Ice Hockey Team. The chapter also attended events such as the Buddy Ball, Rock Your Socks in March, and the Annual Best Buddies Friendship Walk in April!
Jill Ruggiero’s dedication and passion have made a significant difference in the lives of many. We are incredibly grateful for her contributions and look forward to seeing the continued positive impact she will have as a Best Buddies advisor. Thank you, Jill!
