Best Buddies Living comes to Gainesville!
An inclusive living program that is “at once ordinary and extraordinary,” as described by the Washington Post, has made it to Gainesville, Florida. Best Buddies Living is largely like any other roommate experience; however, it is intentionally inclusive. This program offers spaces for people both with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities to live together as roommates while accomplishing their individual hopes and dreams.
With the initiatives of one-to-one friendships, leadership development, integrated employment, inclusive living, and family support, Best Buddies strives to promote inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Gainesville, Florida is excited to welcome this new Best Buddies Living program right near the University of Florida campus.
At Best Buddies Living, residents spend their time at work or school. Throughout the week, there are dinners and events for the community to provide scaffolding that can later lead to true relationships. In Gainesville this month, the community has planned a game night, museum trip, pizza making, and a public safety informational session with an ice cream sundae bar.
“Over the past two years I have had the honor of serving as a Residential Manager for Best Buddies Living,” said Naomi Harris, a residential manager of Best Buddies Living, “I have seen residents gain independence, graduate from school, get their dream job, make meaningful connections, and so much more. I am excited to bring this program to Gainesville!”
As a new program, Best Buddies had a goal of opening ten locations in ten years. Best Buddies Living has been largely successful across the country, with Gainesville being the tenth location in only four years, accomplishing the organization’s goal in less than half of the anticipated timeframe. At the residence, there are available living spaces for male, female, or non-binary identifying people, with or without intellectual and developmental disabilities. Each resident has their own room and bathroom. There are also different building amenities such as a pool, study rooms, and gym.
