Friendship Walk: A Triumph of Inclusion and Community
On April 13, 2024, Kiwanis Park in Tempe, Arizona, transformed into a lively hub of camaraderie and support as it hosted the 13th annual Best Buddies in Arizona Friendship Walk. The event, dedicated to fostering friendships and creating opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), marked a notable success, drawing over 1,000 participants and raising more than $140,000.
Returning to Kiwanis Park after several years at Tempe Diablo Stadium, attendees enjoyed a scenic one mile walk around the beautiful lake, enhancing the sense of community. Adding to the event’s vibrant ambiance, DJ Dean served as the emcee, with DJ Tarvis keeping the energy high with his music. The crowd was also entertained by a spirited performance from the Hip Hop Homies, making the day even more memorable.
The event featured an array of fantastic vendors, including Higher Octave Healing, The Little Foundation, ClipDart, Boothchella, Ri’s Coffee, Bahama Bucks, and Doich Foods. Participants and visitors alike appreciated the diverse offerings and supportive atmosphere. The Friendship Walk received tremendous backing from sponsors such as Waymo, Pi Kappa Phi and the Ability Experience, Colten Cowell Foundation, ADP Foundation, Absolute HCBS, and Chase’s Diner. Their contributions were crucial in making the event a success, highlighting the power of collective community effort.
“The day was fantastic with lots of support and enthusiasm from everyone involved,” said Steve Mitchell, Friendship Walk Committee Chair. “It was heartwarming to see the community come together for such a meaningful cause.”
