On March 21st, Best Buddies Serbia, in collaboration with Down Syndrome Belgrade and RotarAct Club Belgrade Center, hosted a special event in honor of World Down Syndrome Day. The walk brought together more than 200 friends, families, and advocates to champion the rights and inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities.
A Celebration of Inclusion
The walk began in front of the City Library near Rajićeva Shopping Center, with participants making their way through Knez Mihailova Street before gathering at Republic Square. There, the celebration continued with an inspiring dance performance by individuals with Down syndrome and their friends, supported by the Just Dance school. Through music and movement, they showcased the power of community and the importance of embracing differences.
More Than a Day—A Movement
World Down Syndrome Day, held annually on March 21st, carries deep significance. The date reflects the three copies of chromosome 21, characteristic of individuals with Down syndrome. But the message of this event extends beyond just one day—advocates emphasized the need for continuous support in education, employment, and independent living opportunities for people with disabilities.
“People with Down syndrome are, first and foremost, individuals—not a diagnosis,” event organizers shared. “They deserve the same opportunities to live, work, and contribute to society, and when given that chance, they return love and appreciation tenfold.”
A Step Toward Change
Best Buddies Serbia’s Friendship Walk was open to the public. Through visibility, conversations, and action, the event aimed to break barriers and build a society that recognizes the potential in everyone.
By coming together for this walk, participants took meaningful steps toward a future where inclusion is not just an idea, but a reality.
