Charlie’s love for school spirit and camaraderie started during his siblings’ high school sports games at Santa Margarita Catholic High School (SMC High School). He fondly recalls how the students made him feel like a part of the team, creating lasting memories that shaped his vision for the future. He dreamed of giving back to a school community, and in January 2023, that dream came true. After working with a Best Buddies Job Coach to develop his professional skills, Charlie joined the staff at SMC High School as a paid employee, where he now plays an integral role in ensuring students feel the same warmth and inclusion he experienced.

But Charlie’s growth didn’t stop there. As of October 2024, he’s achieving another milestone: mastering public transportation. Independence has always been a goal for Charlie, and transportation was a significant step in that journey. Last year, he set a goal to navigate his own way to work, and with determination and support, he built up the courage to take the leap. In the fall, Charlie successfully used the OC Access bus to travel to and from work—a monumental achievement that reflects his resilience and commitment to personal growth.

Through his journey, Charlie has shown that inclusion is not just about being part of a community but also about empowering oneself to achieve personal milestones. His role at SMC High School is more than a job; it’s a way to inspire students and staff alike with his dedication, positivity, and unwavering spirit.

Charlie’s story exemplifies the transformative impact of the Best Buddies Jobs program. It’s not just about employment; it’s about building confidence, fostering independence, and creating opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to shine. We are so proud of Charlie and can’t wait to see what he accomplishes next!
